I never even wondered if it's even possible to connect multiple ProTools over network, so that one would only be processing your FXes. In Reaper it's super easy, I just did a test: I ran a ReaMote.exe on my PC Desktop (WinXP SP3) that is connected with ethernet cable to the router, and ran Reaper on my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.5.8) connected wirelessly to the same router. In preferences there is a setting to enable ReaMote processing, and simply click auto search for ReaMote slaves, an IP of my PC pops up and I'm done. Now I open a VST instrument on a laptop which is also installed on my PC, and choose Remote processing at the top, and as simple as that my MIDI is being sent to the PC where audio is generated and sent back, and all the controls I change on local VST GUI are reflected on the processing machine, all with roughly 1024 samples of latency. It took more time to write this post. :D
