I just got an Alesis 3630 compressor at a pawn shop and it is in great condition. I was wondering about where should is set the attack and release. It is for a bass vocal in a live situation. Thanx

put it in the trash... they stink. I own one and it is just a rack space filler. But, since that isn't what you wanted to hear.... You really have to do it by ear. "Why" do you want to compress....what are you looking to do to/for the sound? Attack determines how fast the compressor does the job of coming in once the signal reached the threshhold, and release tells it when to let go. Ratio is how much to compress for every db over the threshold.

I still have one. I too use it as filler. I've considered using it as part of my live guitar rig but that rack is full. So, it's a spacer in my studio rack. Almost as good as a Funk Logic filler. Here's some compression info:
