editing media as in Cubase?

I've read about using an external editor but that is not what I want to do. what I want to do is being able to double-click a media file (say .wav) and see it as in cubase (zoomed in and being able to edit it more easily that way). Is this possible? Here are some screenshots:

Not really possible, Reaper doesn't have a separate audio editing window itself. Your options are to use an external editor or rethink your workflow.

Get the sws extensions :) (and xenakios) in there is a great toggle key command to zoom selected items full screen and then back again. welcome! :)

Still in the "non-destructive" realm, but try this... Select the track and hit "Shift and ~" This will maximize the track height. As always, you can use the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out horizontally. To return to normal size just hit Shift and ~ again. Like I said, it's non-destructive, but maybe that's a good thing ;) EDIT: This is doesn't use Xen/SWS extensions, like the above method. This also is on a track-level and not item-level.
