Hey, Folks. Do we know yet if Reaper is compatible with the Intel 980X 6-core? I've got one coming, but can wait to do the build if necessary. Does it run OK, at least on 4 of the cores? By any chance can it use all 6 cores? In case it matters, I'm still running Windows XP32. -thanks
It will use all six core but more importantly it will use 12 threads :) I would advise you to use windows 7 x64 though when you build your machine and put at least 6 gigs of ram in it. MC p.s. when the price drops I'll drop a 980x in my machine too :D

Thanks, guys. No WIndows 7 for me, yet, even though I REALLY need the extra ram. Once Paul at Lynx tells me it's safe & solid, I'll switch, but right now he says there are still known problems. My rigs are for live performance and have to be 100,000,000% dependable. Anyway, that's GREAT news about Reaper & all six cores. Whooo-weee...... this is going to be good!
Wow, I'm shocked at that price myself. That REALLY sux. - but if you need that kind of power & multi-tasking for a live-performance rig, or on-set video editing, there's just nothing like it. You could of course build an 8-core for about the same money, but then your forced to use an ATX mobo instead of (as I use) a mATX, so your rack case gets a lot larger & heavier. Also, using an 8-core mobo requires (I think) server ram, which is a LOT slower since it has to double-check all the computations. (built for safety, not speed)
Well, there have been careful tests done, a few times in the past, by some heavy duty video guys, and the conclusion was alway that the difference was "significant." -but who knows what that really means. Maybe 5 minutes when doing 3D rendering for an hour. If you're right about the possibility of a "desktop" 8-core PC, that would be a no-brainer for a studio application. whew... I've got an 8-core Mac Pro coupled with a huge PT TDM system, at you just don't have to worry about anything at all. Just throw stuff up, and it works. With the PC, you'd likely be able to OC it to much faster than the Mac.
