Routing MIDI through reaper

I am trying to route two midi keyboards through Reaper on a crappy old laptop (p3 600) via USB mid ports. I am sending midi back out to several hardware modules. I get hung and dropped notes. The timing otherwise is fine. Is this likely due to the crappyness of the computer? Has anyone got this working OK?

as far as i have tried this has worked for me as well but what i'd recommend is a combination of EnergyXT running standalone or as vst in a host like Tobybear Minihost. use XT in conjunction with the excellent Thalamus freeware vst plugin to route the midi to your heart's content. set this to run on startup and your routing is immediate AND it doesn't clutter up your reaper tracklist.
