Please, take a look at the screenshot: . As you see, the color representation (green in my case) differs from item to track name. Is this a bug or a feature? I'm using Reaper 3.04pre2, Win7. Thanks.

Yep, I often whine about that, too. It has to do with the z-ordering of the color tinting as far as I can dare to expertise. Tcp background and label background pictures are mixing with the color on the labels as well as item background picture and track background colors mix with the item coloring. You will never get the color you chose in the color picker window and items and labels will react different to each other also. It's the most obvious in the default theme with dark greens and brownish colors. Which is not to say itis a flaw of the default theme. Other themes have different weaknesses. The best results I get when a theme totally avoids tcp_namebg.png (the pic for the label field) and has black, opaque itembg.png (the item picture). Here's a collage about which color I pick and what is shown on the default's tcp label field and items

Wow, that's quite a jump back in time :). The issue is still the same. It is about how the same custom color shows up different, depending on where it is displayed, and a) at no place in Reaper looks like the color as picked from the swatchbox. b) (what the OP talks about) looks very different above "namebg.png" as opposed to "itembg.png". This is also the case when you make these two images exactly the same color. I suppose that's because in case of items the track background (odd/even) color comes into the mix as well. My pic is of course a Photoshop cut and paste orgy, but it basically shows colors as they are shown above tcp_namebg (or "track label background as it is called in the preferences) and items. Pref -> Appearance: "Set track label backgrounds..." is ticked, "Tint track panel..." unticked, and Appearance -> Media: "Tint backgrounds to..." are both ticked. "Media item background fill mode" is Normal 1.00, I believe. The columns (left to right) show: - Track label background (namebg.png) for unselected (1) and - for selected tracks (2) - column (3) is a reference where I pasted in the colors as they actually look on the color swatches (you can get them by having no namebg.pngs at all in the theme's folder, which is what I do right now) - column 4 are all selected items (tinted to custom track color) - column 5 are selected items within a time selection and - column 6 are unselected items Hope this helps in any way. Personally I still would be in favor of some dedicated places on tcp/mcp and on items that are able to show me the exact chosen color, but I'd be already a happy fellow if I could have a namebg.png and still a dark green color showing on the track label field. There's been several threads about it during the v3.0 pre release sessions.

This drives me crazy as well. I never know what I am going to get when I choose a color. Each theme gives me something entirely different. Isn't it possible for me to just color the media item with the color I actually pick? I suppose it all depends on the underlying theme, but it would be nice if there were an option to just full on paint the item the color that you choose regardless of the theme. I was able to get some pretty good results by using pure white or pure black images for the media items. This has the unfortunate side effect of having your default items (tracks that aren't yet colored) appear undesirable. Is there a way to force new tracks to have a new color?
