this is a very newbie question perhaps. anyway, all comments and responses greatly appreciated. my yamaha dgx 505 keyboard has beautiful sounds. I would like to use them as softsynth or plugin or soundbanks (or whatever its called) in Reaper. I would record a midi track or a few . and then be able to edit the performance and use the yamaha sounds as plugins. and print and wonderful. I am doing my best to use the right terminology here folks. total midi newb here. I talked to yamaha. they said something about sampling. then they said talk to the DAW people. so here I am asking you folks for any help you can give me. my soundcard has only a 1/8" jack. but the output jack for my monitors is 1/8" too, and it works excellently. thanks, chas

I tihink what you will need to do is record the MIDI in Reaper, edit/arrange it as desired, then send the MIDI back out to your Yamaha where it will create the sounds. Have a look through these threads to get started: ..... and and and ---------- To capture the Yamaha-generated audio you can use the plugin ReaInsert, which can send the MIDI out to your Yamaha and recieve back the audio; you could then record the audio in Reaper. Have a look at section 3.31 in the User Guide.

We've done (hacked) that with a Yamaha YPG-series. Play (poorly, at times) on the Yamaha, which is connected by USB to the PC, sending MIDI data to Reaper. Fiddle with the MIDI in Reaper's editor to fix the mistakes, etc. Save as a *.mid Send the MIDI data to the Yamaha via USB, with a 1/4" TRS cable routed back to our M-Audio Fast Track Pro's input into Reaper. Very kludgy, but it worked for a couple of things we just couldn't get any other way.

Here is an example (I was using a software MIDI device outside Reaper) to get you started. -- make sure that your hardware appears as an output MIDI device and as an input audio device (or do some audio routing outside Reaper to get the hardware audio output connected to a Reaper audio input). -- add ReaInsert to track A, -- set it to Send out MIDI to the synth, -- set track A to record MIDI from your keyboard, -- set track B to Record audio from your synth. Click Record and Play your MIDI keyboard, click Stop and save the recordings. You can do this all on one track, but that is a bit more complicated: -- add ReaInsert to the track, -- set it to Send out MIDI to the synth, -- set it to Receive audio in from the synth, -- set the track to record MIDI (or Audio output (latency compensated)) from your keyboard. Click Record and Play your MIDI keyboard, click Stop and save the recording. You'll probably need to adjust some latency timings to but I have not figured out exactly what is needed. HTH
