I have a big session with a lot of VCA masters. The session was created in 7.2, and all was well then. Now, when I hit solo on a VCA master, i get the swofd and protools "unexpectedly quits". Any thoughts? think i will head back to 7.2 but i would rather not. Please advise.

I'm not seing it here, but obviously I'm not working on the same session as you. 7.3 seems very good so far, also on sessions with VCAs. I can at least share with you how I went through the update process from 7.2. 1) Unmount FW drives, and install the combined update for OS 10.4.8. I did it since it's the only version officially supported with 7.3. 2) Repair permissions, and restart the computer. 3) Delete Digidesign databases (folder), Volumes (folder), DAE Prefs (folder) and all prefs recommended by Digidesign when doing general troubleshooting. Empty trash, and restart the computer. 4) Install 7.3. It all went smooth, and I've been working on multiple sessions for five hours straight. FWIW...
thanks for the info. I had a very similar upgrade process, except that I already had 10.4.3 installed. I did all of the other things that you mentioned. this is repeatable for me, though not with every VCA master. Some smaller groups don't have a problem, but a group of 30 or so stereo tracks bussed to 5.1 outs crashes everytime on soloing the vca master. Otherwise, the session seems ok, though after installing 7.3, i had a few more invalid fades reported on opening the sesison than I did on 7.2 in the same session. I had two before, now I have five. I don't know how to get rid of those, or if they are causing a problem. I will try to fix the crashing by deleteing the vca master and the associated group and remaking it in 7.3. If that doesn't work, i am back to 7.2 for now.
Hi I had a nightmare on 7.2 the other day with invalid fades........caused me all sorts of problems (unable to import session data, random events such as SWOD, unable to open session etc.) which only went away when I erased all the naughty fades and consolidated all the audio in the session. So you may well be onto something there. I'd try and get rid of the invalid fades if I were you. I did it by highlighting a little bit more file than the fade and hitting delete then extending the file again then consolidating without fades. I've also had a 7.3 sort of crash today. I was putting PT through it's paces and had been deleting and adding tracks while still in play, when I noticed that, even though everything looked normal, the keyboard/mouse no longer seemed to be working properly within pro tools, eg. I couldn't save or do anything from the drop down menus and (tho the menus did drop down and looked as they should) and the mouse wouldn't allow the grabber tool to grab or move audio, highlighting/ positioning was still possible tho. Everything outside PT worked as normal. I forced/quit rebooted tools and all was ok. didn't bother deleting/adding tracks anymore cos I had work to do. That aside my first impressions of 7.3 are very favourable. Love the dynamic transport and ability to shift the loop on the fly! G4 800Mhzdual 1.5gb ram PT 7.3 OSX 10.4.7
The fade files are in the same folder as your audio files Thrash the whole fade files folder and re-open the session. FWIW RULE 1 Don't upgrade in the middle of a project. RULE 2 spend $75.00 on a second drive and clone your system drive as back up before any upgrades Rule 3 READ the tropubleshooting section at the top of this conference it WILL fix 98% of the problems you will ever see.
thanks, but I had the fade issue before i upgraded i can always go back if this persists, but I was crashing before, so I thought a change would be good. i tossed the fades and rebuilt them but the invalid one was still there. it was in the session playlist, not an actual fade file. thanks though

It's likely that the invalid fades were created in a version of Pro Tools earlier than 6.7, where I believe we finally stomped on that problem. Is that the case? (I hope?) Danny Caccavo Digidesign
Hi Danny, I've made invalid fades on 7.1 XP rigs. In fact, I'm very sure I didn't even make them. They just appeared. One time I just shut down Pt and they reopened the session and additional invalid fades were reported. Peace, Brandon
