Hi, I'd like to (guitar) improvise during 10 mn on a part of a song during 2 mn and in the end take the best part of the solo and put it in the 2mn-portion of the song. A kind of play as I feel and take the best part. I though to loop the 2mn-portion of the song and improvise non-stop on it. Does this work ? How does Reaper manage the takes ? I mean taking the numbers, 10 mn solo in a 2mn-portion should give me 5 takes of 2mn. Do you use this/or similar technique to improvise ? If no, how do you do ?

Just set up a loop selection, press the repeat button on the transport and start recording.

I always record in sections, like 16 bars or so, or each major section of a song. I usually keep loop recording until I have at least two great passes. Then in the takes I usually choose the best regions from each of the takes and comp them into a master take. After recording hit CTRL + L to show the takes in lanes. The just put your mouse over an area you want to isolate and hit S to cut there. Select the sections you want and at the end lock all the pieces. Right click over a lane to see what options you have as well. Play with it for a few minutes and takes will be your new friend.

Carbon's right, it is harder to explain the take system than do it. Here is a video on YouTube that goes into the take system in Reaper. He gets pretty in depth. Basically, what I use takes for is to record a couple of passes and then chop them up into bits and choose the best bits for each section. This then becomes a "comp". You can set up a loop region for that 2 minutes and record many takes only in that region. You end up with lanes and by clicking on a lane it becomes active and plays back. You can chop the lanes up and then select the preferred bits for playback and the others remain muted.
