Are you using old or new subtitle renderer / parser? Check in Preferences>Subtitles>Use new subtitle parser/renderer.

Use new subtitle parser/renderer option is grayed out, could that be a codec problem? I have CCCP installed. Thanks

New subtitle renderer can be selected only when media file is not loaded.
