I recorded this earlier, looking for any criticism regarding the mix/overall sound. The drums were done using ezdrummer, bass was a 4front bass vsti. The guitars are double tracked, each panned hard left/right I think. Cant tell if they're too loud. I dont have proper monitors working yet so its hard to tell on creative pc speakers :\ I find it really hard to get a big, pristine modern metal sound. Could be my amp though, its not really voiced for modern metal.
i like it, maybe the drums need fastening up a bit form my taste, the snare pops out a bit to much and the guitar is a bit to prominent but hey, what do i know, i can only hear in mono at moment !!! good song though :)
sounds good to me - the guitar tone sounds perfectly "modern". As far as the drums, I'd back the cymbals off a bit. They seem way up front. yeah, maybe the guitars are a little too up front also. Just back them off a little tiny bit.
Yeah I thought the cymbals may be a tad loud. My intention wasnt really to get it sounding like the original. I dont even like this genre, just thought I'd give it a go as I've always struggled to get decent recorded metal tones before. Mic placement helps a lot!

I was searching for threads on EZdrummer and came across this one. I'm a big fan of this genre, and I think you did a pretty good job. I do know what you're saying about the guitar tone. I think it's primarily a lack of gain on your amp. Don't get me wrong, I think your tone sounds good, but if you're trying to duplicate KSE's guitar tone, you will definitely need more gain. I use a POD X3, and I think it does a great job of modeling high-gain amps. I do have a couple questions though. How did you make the drum track in EZdrummer? I'm considering purchasing that plugin, but it seems to me that it would be pretty difficult to search through the included MIDI loops to find beats that match a certain drum beat you have in mind. Or did you manually program the MIDI hits in REAPER? That seems like it would be rather tedious. About the bass VSTi, how exactly does that work? Do you have to actually program all the notes using MIDI, or is there some way to program them using a tabulature system?
I dont really play this kind of metal so adding an EMG would be a bit pointless in my guitars :P I see what you're saying though, it needs more saturation. These pickups are basically slightly overwound PAFs so its not surprising that they dont do metal amazingly. As for ezdrummer, I took a guitar pro file of the song and within Guitar Pro, deleted every track but the drums, then exported that as a midi file. I did the same for bass. Then I just set Reapers tempo to that of the guitar pro file, and imported the two midi tracks. Then it was just a simple case of messing around with ezdrummers settings until I got this.. I usually use the 13" snare but the rest usually stay as default.
