You do not "need" a second drive to run Protools, however Digidesign highly recommends you have a second drive for audio. Most professional applications run much more efficient and you will get far greater performance if you have a second drive for application files. Just add a second internal ATA/IDE drive. There are step by step instructions on the Apple web site. To properly master, you will need proper mastering equipment, hardware and software. You can do some basic mastering within Protools, however mastering for professional quality is best left to a professional. You can burn an audio CD with the Apple application iTunes. You can download from the Apple website. Hope this is helpful.

Let me get this staight.... Are you saying that the Protools app files should be on the external drive or just the audio files? I presently have the PT app on my internal I-mac drive and the audio files are saved to the external firewire drive. It seems to be working but I am early on in the PT experience and would like to eliminate any future headaches as these files grow and enlarge. Tommy

Master drive contains System OS and applications. Additional drives (not partitions of the master drive) internal or external, are for files created by the applications. Hope this is helpful.
