I saw something that said you could download a program and type words into it and it would sing back what you wrote like a girl's voice. Are there really any good programs that can do that? If so, do you enter the notes like you would with any keyboard? From my position of ignorance it seems it could sound good if you did it right, and could sound horrible if you did it wrong. If they really exist, are there any decent free ones?

Nothing free, afaik. Heard good things about , some impressive demo tracks on their site. Best free female vox I know of is - won't do phrases and such, really meant for the full version of Kontakt, but has wav files that can be used with any sampler.

If you're on OS X or have access to a Mac, you can make the operating system voices do waaaaaaay more than you'd think using the Repeat After Me dev tool. They won't sound like real voices, obviously, just computer TTS voices doing crazy stuff, so if you want realism it won't do. Also, Plogue makes something called Chipspeech that is commercial but may fit the bill. Of course there's always Vocaloid, but my experience with it wasn't great. I've heard impressive results though.
