I really need some advice. My 2002 S40 had an accident over a rut. The off side track rod snapped. The result is the wheel has no steering at all and is free to go where it chosses. A general car mechanic, who takes gearboxes and engines in and out of such cars as Ford vans, told me I should get a second hand steering rack as damage may have occured to the rack. Do you think this is the sort of job a general car mechanic could carry out on axle stands at home or should I take it to a reputable garage? Looking forward to your views. Sam

Personally i would just get a new track rod end fitted and the tracking done and see what its like before going down the road of a new steering rack.

Hi There See This Every Day Both Snapped And Bent Tie Rod Arms. The Tierod It Self Will Unscrew From The Rack Bar Its Self This Will Not Be That Easy With Rack Still On The Car.now I Doubt You Have Caused Any Damage To The Steering Rack Its Self As The Steering Bar Is Quite Thick And Of A High Grade Steel And Seen And I Hve Never Seen One Bent Yet And Only Reconed May Be 2 In All Its Time Unlike The 850/v70 C70 Rack Man Has That Rack Got Problems.now If Your Steeering Turns From Left To Right Without Any Stiff Spots(engine Off Wheels Off The Ground)you Should Feel The Same Reistance All The Way Through. Any Problems Just Pm Me Good Luck

if you hit a rut hard enough to snap a track rod end off then am guessing it may well have damaged something else, suspension strut etc
